James Brindley and the Early Engineers by Samuel Smiles, published by John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1864. This edition is abridged from the author's 'Lives of the Engineers', with the right of translation reserved as noted on the title page. The preface sets the work alongside Smiles's 'Story of the Life of George Stephenson', and the volume includes memoirs of earlier engineers such as Sir Cornelius Vermuyden and Sir Hugh Myddelton.

The book has lost its original binding: the boards have become detached from the text block, with the plain brown front board shown separately from the spine and marbled edges. The spine covering is worn and the marbled paper is chipped at the corners. The text block itself appears firm, with cream-toned pages and clear printed text visible at the sample opening, which includes footnotes. Some light foxing and toning is present on the page edges.
