Metaphysical Lyrics & Poems of the Seventeenth Century, subtitled Donne to Butler, selected and edited with an essay by Herbert J. C. Grierson, published by Oxford at the Clarendon Press. The volume gathers metaphysical verse from Donne through to Butler, with an extended introductory essay. The copyright page confirms first publication in 1921, with reprints in 1925, 1928, 1936, 1942, 1947, 1950 and 1952.

The book has a printed paper-covered boards design with a decorative border and a matching patterned spine giving the title, subtitle and editor's name. The spine shows noticeable toning and surface wear, with chipping and a small loss at the foot. The corners are bumped and show wear to the covering material, with a split visible at the front hinge area and a torn section at the top of the rear panel. Page edges are tanned. Internally the paper shows the expected ivory tone for its age, with a small amount of light spotting noted on the fore edge at the end of the text block.
