The Reader's Handbook of Allusions, References, Plots and Stories, by the Rev. E. Cobham Brewer, published by Chatto & Windus, Piccadilly, 1895. The title page carries the edition statement "Seventeenth Thousand" and the preliminary pages include the dedication "To my daughters, Nellie and Amy, this volume is dedicated by their affectionate father".

The book is bound in red cloth with the title, author and publisher lettered in gilt on the spine. The spine covering is worn and darkened, with cracking along the joints and a section of the lettering piece missing, exposing the board beneath in places. The corners and head of the spine show wear and rubbing. The front and rear boards are plain red cloth with scuffing to the edges.

Internally, the title page and facing leaf show scattered brown spotting and foxing. The text pages seen are cleaner, printed in double columns with entries arranged alphabetically. The text block appears firm within the worn casing.
