DON GYPSY - Walter Starkie
Don Gypsy by Walter Starkie, published by John Murray. This is the Cheap Edition of 1938, the title page noting the first edition appeared in June 1936. The book carries a frontispiece and title-page design by Arthur Rackham, with the title page itself featuring a line drawing of a donkey cart laden with jars. The text includes further illustrations and photographic plates, such as a portrait of a gypsy coppersmith, along with musical notation reproduced within the chapters on Moorish music.
The cloth binding is cream coloured with a small red cart-and-donkey motif to the lower front board, and matching lettering to the spine reading Don Gypsy, Starkie, John Murray. The spine cloth shows noticeable spotting and discolouration. The boards show some soiling and light marking, with wear to the extremities and corners. The text block edges are tanned. Internally the paper appears age toned, consistent with the book's date.
