Retreat in the East - O'Dowd Gallagher
Retreat in the East by O'Dowd Gallagher, published by Viking Press as a Viking War Book, catalogue number W.404. This edition dates from 1956, a second impression of that year, the work having originally appeared under George G. Harrap & Co. in 1942. It is a wartime reportage account, with the cover describing it as "stark, naked realism" and quoting press notices on the back relating to the fall of Malaya and Burma and the sinking of the Prince of Wales and Repulse.
The paperback covers carry a colour illustration of soldiers in jungle terrain to the front and further artwork to the rear. The spine shows noticeable wear, with the head and tail chipped and worn away in places. The covers are rubbed and creased at the corners and edges, with toning to the card. Internally, the pages have browned with age, consistent with the book's date, and the text remains legible throughout the sampled pages.
