The Argosy
This is Volume XLVII of The Argosy magazine, covering January to June 1889, edited by Charles W. Wood and published by Richard Bentley & Son of New Burlington Street, London.
The volume is bound in dark green cloth, with the spine lettered ARGOSY and 47 in gilt between ruled bands. The spine shows wear along its edges and some loss at the head, with scuffing and light marking visible on the cloth. The front board shows scattered marking and some rubbing at the corner. The rear free endpaper carries noticeable brown staining across much of its surface, and a bookbinder's label for Tuckey & McMichael of Worcester Street, Birmingham, is affixed to the front pastedown.
The text block paper is a pale cream colour and the print is clear and well set, with the opening story, The Village Blacksmith, beginning the January 1889 number. The volume opens with illustrations credited to W. Small and R. Taylor.
