Troy and its Remains - Dr. Henry Schliemann
Troy and its Remains, by Dr. Henry Schliemann, edited by Philip Smith, B.A., published by John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1875.
This is an account of Schliemann's excavations on the site of Ilium and the Trojan Plain, illustrated with maps, plans, and numerous engraved objects of antiquity, as shown in the list of illustrations and plate descriptions reproduced inside.
The book is bound in gilt-decorated cloth, with a dark maroon ground to the boards and a mustard-gold spine and edges. The front board carries a gilt panel depicting Apollo driving a chariot of horses, within a blind-stamped border of roundels and geometric motifs. The spine is lettered in gilt with the title and author's name, with an owl-vase decoration beneath.
There is wear and splitting at the head and tail of the spine, with some loss of the cloth at these points. The title page bears the Halesowen College of Further Education stamp, and a shelf number appears on the title verso. The text block paper shown is cream, with some light spotting visible on the printer's imprint page.
