Surrey at Work in Old Photographs - Chris Shepheard
Surrey at Work in Old Photographs, collected by Chris Shepheard, published by Sutton (Alan Sutton) in paperback, first published 1992 and reprinted 1997, produced with the Surrey Industrial History Group.
The book brings together archive photographs covering a century or so of employment in Surrey, from agriculture and manufacturing to the fire and rescue services, retail and the role of women at work, arranged in sections such as The Job in Hand, The Workplace and Accidents will Happen.
The cover shows a black and white photograph of workmen on a tall wooden scaffold against a purple background, with clean, glossy lettering. The spine text is clear and unmarked. The back cover carries the blurb, ISBN and price. Internally the paper is cream and the photographs and captions are sharply printed, including shots of the poppy factory in Richmond and a steam roller crew. No damage or foxing is visible in the photographed pages.
